A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of John Mitchell (1768-1844). The painting was by John Graham-Gilbert and it was exhibited in 1868 at what was known as the Gallery of Art (subsequently the McLellan Gallery) on Sauchiehall Street along with other portraits of significant Glasgow figures.

John Mitchell was the Professor of Biblical Criticism at the United Secession Church's Divinity Hall and the minister of Wellington Street US Church.
