A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of John Anderson of Dowhill, c 1611-1684. The painter is unknown.
Anderson was an important merchant who pioneered trading links with continental Europe and in 1667 became a partner in Glasgow's soap works. He was treasurer of the city in 1646 and a bailie between 1646 and 1655, and was chosen as Provost in 1658 and in 1667. His brother had been Provost before him, and his son later served in that office.
