A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of John Bell (d 1641) who was the first Presbyterian Minister of the Tron Kirk in 1592. The original artist is unknown.
The painting (a copy of which appears on this website) appeared in an 1868 exhibition of portraits in the new Glasgow Gallery of Art on Sauchiehall Street. Annan was commissioned by the Town Council to photograph all of the 462 paintings and busts in the show and bring them together in an illustrated catalogue.
The gallery at 270 Sauchiehall Street was built by Archibald McLellan in the early 1850s and acquired by the Corporation following his death in 1854.
