Bishop Cameron's Arms

The coat of arms of Bishop John Cameron, as they were displayed on the Great Tower of the Bishop's Castle. Cameron was consecrated as Bishop of Glasgow in 1426 and four years later added the five-storey Great Tower to the castle.

In 1424 John Cameron was made Secretary of State by King James I. He sat on the board of Commissioners who negotiated a continuation of peace with England. He is also credited with increasing the number of canons in the See of Glasgow from twenty-five to thirty-two, making the cathedral chapter the largest in Scotland. Nine of these men held special offices such as dean, archdeacon and chancellor.

Bishop Cameron was succeeded by James Bruce in 1446.
