Long Barney

"Long Barney", a song which has been preserved in a scrapbook entitled Old Glasgow Street Songs etc, 1850 and held at the Mitchell Library.

The song about a formidable and violent Irishman who wooed a woman, thrashed his rival and won a pig, all in a fairground tent. "Said Barney I'll soon make you toddle, and hit him a crack on the noddle." John Thomson wrote the words and performed the song in the Jupiter, one of Glasgow's "singing saloons."

"Barney" was Glasgow slang for an Irishman.
