Domestic Science Lesson

A domestic science lesson at Canning Place Public School in 1916.

This classroom had been converted into a domestic living room (complete with aspidistras!). Three girls are learning how to carry out domestic chores such as cleaning and polishing. Their teacher is keeping a watchful eye over them from the far corner.

The school curriculum placed a heavy emphasis on training girls in domestic economy and household management, to prepare them for lives as housewives or in domestic service.
