Horatio MacCulloch

A photograph of a portrait of Horatio McCulloch (1805-1867). The painting was by Sir Daniel Macnee.

McCulloch was a renowned romantic landscape painter who was born in Glasgow where he is believed to have studied under John Knox (1778-1845) for a year at the beginning of his career. A commission from Lord Provost James Lumsden in the 1830s helped established the artist's reputation within Scotland and he was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1838. He went on to establish an international following for his epic Highland landscapes.
