Hayfield Public School

Hayfield Public School on Old Rutherglen Road in the Gorbals in 1916.

The photograph shows a mixed class learning rugmaking skills in a relatively pleasant classroom. The man on the left may be the headmaster. There are some stark reminders of the strict classroom regime of the day, written on signs on the walls: "Speak when you are spoken to" and "Obey".

The piano on the left of the image would have been used to accompany the children when they sang hymns. Music was not a subject on the Scottish school curriculum at this time.
