A photograph looking south towards a fire in an upholstery warehouse in James Watt Street, 18 November 1968. Twenty-two people died in the blaze, in one of the city's worst disasters.
The fire started on the ground floor of the building owned by the upholsterers B Stern trapping everyone on the floors above, including Julius Stern, the brother of the owner. Seventy firemen from all over the city were called upon to help put out the fire. At one point sparks threatened to ignite a petrol station on the Broomielaw which would surely have had even more disastrous consequences. To the left of the image are two Glasgow Salvage Corps vans.
