The yacht Shamrock was designed by William Fife Jr and built by Thorneycroft & Co in Millwall in the winter of 1898-1899 for the Glasgow merchant Sir Thomas Lipton. The vessel, which cost £120,000 and was fitted out in Glasgow, was built to compete in the 1899 America's Cup.
Lipton lost the 1899 race series 3-0 to the American yacht Columbia, skippered by Charlie Barr. He went on to compete five times for the cup, each time in a yacht called Shamrock, but was never a winner.
