Queen's Dock

Photograph showing work on the construction of a section of the north wall trench of Queen's Dock, May 1876. Concrete foundation blocks are being lowered into place by cranes running on rails laid along what was to become the quayside. The wall was subsequently faced with Giffnock sandstone and back-filled with rubble.

After completing the quays, the contractors had to excavate the dock basins. This involved the removal of all of the material to the left of this photograph to the low water level of the river. Once a basin had been flooded, dredgers would enter to excavate more material and lower the level still further.
