An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1860-1861 for R E Simpson & Co. The firm was one of the earliest to manufacture sewing machines in the west of Scotland, to their own designs and those patented by inventors such as the American Isaac Merrit Singer (1811-1875). Singer's company had opened an office in Glasgow in 1856 and the Singer Manufacturing Co began assembling sewing machines in premises in Love Loan, near George Square, in 1867.
