An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1854-1855 for Mair's boots and shoes, aimed directly at exporters to overseas markets. Until the mid-19th century most of the boots and shoes manufactured in Glasgow were made at home or in small workshops by cobblers. Mair's Boot and Shoe Warehouse was one of the first in the city to advertise ready-made, mass-produced footwear.
