An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1854-1855 for the City of Glasgow Fine Art Association which sought to "promote the knowledge of and love of the fine arts in this city".

The association's president was Archibald McLellan (1795-1856), a coach builder and art collector. In 1855-1856 he built the McLellan Galleries in Sauchiehall Street to exhibit his paintings, but died soon after the building was completed. The galleries and the collection were subsequently purchased by the city council.
