An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1853-1854 for the United States Line, one of several shipping lines sailing between Glasgow and New York. Packets were fast ships primarily intended to carry mail across the Atlantic Ocean, but which would also carry passengers. Many thousands of emigrants left Glasgow for the New World crowded aboard ships such as these.
