Crookston Castle

Robert Paul completed this engraving of Crookston Castle in 1763 while studying at the Foulis Academy. The tree to the right of the image is the celebrated Crookston Yew where Lord Darnley and Mary Queen of Scots are said to have courted. This scene was dedicated to Sir James Maxwell, the younger brother of Sir Walter, fourth baronet of Nether Pollok, who acquired the castle in 1758.

The castle consisted of a three-storey block with square towers at each corner. During a siege in 1488 all but one of the towers was destroyed. Nevertheless, the castle was occupied until the end of the 16th century.

In 1931 Sir John Stirling Maxwell presented Crookston Castle to the National Trust for Scotland.
