Glasgow from South East

This engraving was produced by Robert Paul in 1762 when he was just twenty-three years old. The view is from what is now a point on Duke Street to the west of the Cattle Market, and shows a panorama from the University's Macfarlane Observatory to Glasgow Cathedral. The fields in the foreground are part of the Easter Common.

From the observatory on the far left, the artist has included the St Andrew's Church steeple; the walls of the College Gardens; the Bridgegate steeple; the Tolbooth steeple; the Tron steeple; Hutchesons' Hospital; the back of Blackfriars Church; the Old College Library; the Old College itself; the Ramshorn Church steeple and the Duke's Lodgings. The street to the right of the latter is Drygate, and to the right of it are the Great Tower of the ruined Bishop's Palace, and the Cathedral.

This engraving would have been sold for one shilling (5p) in the 1760s.
