During the 17th and 18th centuries, many of Glasgow's most fashionable residences were built on the "Stockwell gait", or Stockwell Street, which led to a number of fresh water wells and to Glasgow Bridge. Nos 29-37 Stockwell Street, pictured here sandwiched between two 19th century tenements in the 1840s, was a relic of former glories.
The street became home to slum housing in the 19th century and was cleared and rebuilt as part of the City Improvement Trust scheme during the early 1900s.
