Birgidale Road, Castlemilk

Three-apartment flats in Birgidale Road in Castlemilk, 1958, photographed soon after they were first occupied. This type of tenement accommodation was widely used in housing estates built by Glasgow Corporation in the years following the Second World War.

As can be seen by the roofline, much of Castlemilk was built on hilly ground, previously farmland. The air was much cleaner than in the city, and residents could sometimes observe the fog over lower ground in the Clyde valley, while Castlemilk remained clear. On the other hand, the higher ground brought more snow in winter, which could cause problems for buses and other vehicles trying to reach parts of the estate.
