Alex Ferguson

Perhaps the most internationally famous Glasgwegian at the turn of the millennium, Alex Ferguson was pictured for the Glasgow City Council newspaper The Bulletin, receiving the Lord Provost's Sports Award for 1994 from Bailie Tommy Dingwall.

Born in Govan, Alex Ferguson played for a number of Scottish football clubs including Rangers. He entered football management in 1974, and in 1978 became manager of Aberdeen. In the early 1980s Aberdeen won three league titles and four Scottish Cups, and defeated Real Madrid in the final of the 1983 European Cup-Winners Cup.

In 1986 Ferguson became manager of Manchester United, a club which had been in decline. After a slow start, United won the FA Cup in 1990 and the European Cup-Winners Cup in 1991. The club won the league championship in 1993 for the first time in twenty-six years. Other honours followed, most notably in season 1998-1999 when United won a treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Champions League, after which Ferguson was knighted.
