Mark McManus

A photograph of Mark McManus (1935-1994) from Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, October 1994. McManus was chosen as the first posthumous recipient of the Lord Provost's Award. His family accepted the Performing Arts Award just a few months after his death, at a ceremony at which Lord Provost James Shields declared, "to many people Mark McManus was Glasgow".

Born in Bellshill, Mark McManus moved to Australia in the 1960s where he gained his early acting experience. On his return to Britain he played a coal miner in the 1973 television series Sam and worked in theatre. He is best remembered for playing the title role of tough Glasgow police detective Taggart in the Scottish Television series of dramas. Taggart was first screened in 1983, and has been screened in over forty countries.
