Library assistant Fehmeda Sarwar with a selection of videos available in the History and Glasgow Room of the Mitchell Library. The photograph appeared in the September 1994 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin. By the 1990s, the city's libraries were moving away from a book-based service towards the provision of more audio visual materials and computer services.

In August 1994 a major re-organisation took place within the Mitchell Library. Ten subject departments were condensed into five: Science and Technology in the old building; Social Sciences on level 2 of the new building; Business Information on level 4; Arts on level 4 and History and Glasgow Room, on level 5. Strathclyde Regional Archives, in the old building, were unaffected at this point.

In 2000 a further upheaval saw the final abandonment of subject departments. The new sections are Information and Business Services, General Services and Archives and Special Collections, the latter incorporating the Glasgow Collection and Glasgow City Archives.
