Five postage stamps pictured in the May 1993 issue of the Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin. They were issued to commemorate the 14th World Orchid Conference at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in April 1993. Collecting stamps featuring orchids is a speciality catered for by organisations such as the Orchid Stamp Club International and the Orchidcover Collector Club.
Glasgow was selected as only the second-ever European venue for the conference on the strength of the reputation of the city's Botanic Gardens, which has its own orchid collection, and the environmentally-controlled conditions which the SECC could offer. The conference was an outstanding success, with over 20,000 visitors and 1,300 delegates from around the world. The largest hall at the SECC was turned into a sea of colour, with expensive plants including rare specimens from Thailand, China and Brazil on display.
