South Asians at War

Mansur Hussain and members of his family were pictured for the March 1992 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin at the launch of the exhibition "Men and Memories: Admi Aur Yaade" in the Mitchell Library.

The exhibition featured reminiscences of the men from the South Asian community who fought in the Second World War. War veteran Mansur Hussain was a gunner surveyor who was wounded on active service. Another guest was Charanjit Singh Sangha, whose father was awarded the Victoria Cross.

A small Asian community became established in Glasgow in the 1930s, mainly in the Gorbals area. The upheavals caused by the partition of India and the creation of the new state of Pakistan in 1947 resulted in the arrival of still more people from the sub-continent. Many of Glasgow's Asians can trace their origins to the Punjab, which straddles the border between India and Pakistan. Pollokshields, Govanhill, Garnethill and Woodside were popular destinations for the new arrivals, many of whom have established businesses in these areas.
