Sister and brother Anne and George Parsonage pictured in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin at the Glasgow Humane Society House on Glasgow Green, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Society.

The Society was formed in 1790 by the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow for "the rescue and recovery of drowning persons". Since then, its officers have come from only two families, Geddes and Parsonage. The dangers they face in the course of their voluntary work on the River Clyde were underlined by the death by drowning of George Geddes in 1929.

In the last forty years it is estimated that George Parsonage has rescued over a thousand people from the Clyde, and recovered the bodies of hundreds more. Awards received by officers of the society include an MBE for George Parsonage and a British Empire Medal for his father Ben.
