Donald Dewar

Donald Dewar with Norman and Janey Buchan pictured in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin at an event in 1987 to promote the Glasgow Garden Festival.

Donald Dewar was elected Labour MP for Glasgow Garscadden, later Anniesland, in 1978. He served as member of the shadow cabinet between 1984 and 1997. When Labour returned to power in 1997, Dewar became Secretary of State for Scotland and he played a crucial role in fighting the campaign for devolution. He became First Minister when the first Scottish parliament in nearly 300 years was opened in May 1999, but he died the following year.

Norman Buchan and his wife Janey were lifelong campaigners in the Labour movement. Norman was elected as an MP and served as a Government minister, 1967-1970 and 1974. Janey was Glasgow's MEP from 1979-1994. Both were also active in the folk music scene, and Janey played a leading role in the establishment of the Centre for Political Song at Glasgow Caledonian University.
