Dancing in the streets - of Nuremberg. This display of Scottish country dancing in a pedestrian street, illustrated in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, marked the twinning of Glasgow with the German city in July 1985.
Links between the cities had begun with a student exchange scheme in 1954. The formal twinning ceremony in 1985 was attended by a delegation from Glasgow headed by Lord Provost Robert Gray. The event received widespread publicity in the German press. A "Glasgow Week" was held in Nuremberg, with entertainment supplied by dancers, pipers, musicians and folk singers. A "Nuremberg Week" was held in Glasgow in 1987.
A Nuremberg website has helpful information for any citizens thinking of paying a visit to Glasgow - "To find out for yourself that the Scots are certainly not mean and narrow-minded is easy to do ... even if the Scots aren't English and have their own expressions, a knowledge of English is necessary in order to understand them."
