The Jeffrey Room at the Mitchell Library, 1984, when it was the public searchroom of Strathclyde Regional Archives. The screening at the far end enclosed the archive staff's offices.
Glasgow City Archives was established in 1964 when Glasgow Corporation appointed an archivist to the Town Clerk's Department. In 1975 the City Archives transferred to the Chief Executive's Department of the new Strathclyde Region with a new name, Strathclyde Regional Archives, and a widened brief to care for the archives of the Region as well as the city. In 1984 the archives moved from basement premises in the City Chambers to the Jeffrey Room in the Mitchell Library.
After local government re-organisation in 1996 the Archives transferred to the new Department of Libraries and Archives of Glasgow City Council, and reverted to its original title of Glasgow City Archives. It is now part of Archives and Special Collections, which is a department within Libraries, Information and Learning.
