Forge Shopping Centre

A model of the Forge Shopping Centre, Parkhead. The model probably dates from around 1985, when the development was still at the planning stage. The centre opened for business in 1988.

The Forge was built on the site of the former Parkhead Forge steelworks of William Beardmore & Co and is by far the largest shopping centre in the East End. The two-storey building covers an area of over 400,000 square feet. There are sixty shops, most of them well-known names, as well as a multi-screen cinema and 1,800 car parking spaces.

In 1996 the £16.2 million Parkhead Forge Phase 2 development added a retail park and a market hall to the complex. This emphasised the importance of the Forge in the East End, to the extent that it dominates its surroundings in the same way as the steelworks did in the past.
