Annick Street Industrial Estate

Annick Street Industial Estate, Shettleston, looking west in 1987. The spire of Eastbank Church can be seen in the background.

The industrial estate was built by the Scottish Development Agency as part of GEAR, the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal project. Fifty-five small factory units were erected to provide accommodation for small businesses which eventually employed up to 300 people.

GEAR changed the face of the East End, with £500 million of public and private sector investment between 1975 and 1986. It was successful in terms of environmental landscaping, the restoration of sandstone tenement buildings and the fostering of private housing developments. However, the continuing decline and closure of traditional local industries frustrated the aim of achieving net reductions in the area's high rate of unemployment.
