Mosspark Housing

A photograph taken c 1938 showing Corporation houses on Mosspark Drive at Aviemore Road. The tree-lined avenues and high quality of housing built there made Mosspark a very popular housing scheme.

Council houses in areas like Mosspark, which was generally perceived as being one of the "better" areas in Glasgow, proved particularly attractive for tenants to purchase under the "right-to-buy" legislation introduced by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government in the 1980s. One factor which persuaded many tenants to take the plunge into house purchase was rapidly increasing rents made necessary by restrictions on subsidies and high inflation. Between 1979-1980 and 1990-1991, average council house rents in Glasgow increased by over 400 per cent.
