Carntyne Housing

Houses in Glasgow Corporation's Carntyne housing scheme photographed c 1933.

A total of 3,828 houses were built at Carntyne, on both sides of Edinburgh Road. They were a mixture of tenement, flatted, terraced and cottage types and a hostel was built to accommodate single women. Other amenities included three schools, two shopping centres and a church.

Around 500 of the houses at Carntyne, built by the Sunlit Building Company, had flat roofs. The Corporation was persuaded that the advantages of economy and extra sunshine penetration justified this innovation. Rain, however, proved to be a more significant factor, and they were replaced with more conventional sloping roofs at a later date.
