Barrowfield Housing

Three-storey tenement flats built by Glasgow Corporation at Stamford Street, Barrowfield, photographed in 1946. Built during the Second World War, the flats exhibit some features which reflected a shortage of materials at the time - flat roofs and metal windows.

At the beginning of the 21st century Barrowfield's housing stock is set for dramatic transformation. Camlachie Burn, a £3.5 million development of fifty-one new homes built by Camlachie Housing Association, was completed in 2001. All the houses have their own street-level front doors and private gardens and have been built to exceed current building regulations. Over the next few years a further five stages of demolition and re-building will result in the completion of 350 additional new houses to replace existing tenements. Stamford Street will be part of the final phase of the development.
