Swedish Timber Houses

Swedish timber houses under construction for the Scottish Special Housing Association at Balornock in 1945. The photograph was taken on 11 November on the fourth day of construction. The house was completed on 19 December.

The Swedish was one of several types of houses built in Scotland using non-traditional methods of construction, in an attempt to meet speedily the increased demand for housing in the years following the Second World War.

Timber was one of the materials which was in particularly short supply after the war. All the wood used in the construction of these houses was therefore shipped from Sweden. The walls and partitions were received in prefabricated panels complete with doors, windows and ironmongery. The joists, rafters and other components were pre-cut to the lengths required.
