The "Royce" overcoat, illustrated in the Walwer styles overcoats catalogue for the winter of 1939-1940 issued by Wallace & Weir, 26 Argyle Street, manufacturers of men's and boy's clothing.
Royce was a popular name in Glasgow at the time. In 1938 the famous engineering firm Rolls Royce provided a great boost to the city's economy by opening a factory at the new Hillington Industrial Estate for the production of aircraft engines. The outbreak of war in 1939 brought considerable expansion and at the peak of its production the firm employed 25,000 workers.
