Bayne & Duckett

This photograph shows the counting house in Bayne & Duckett's boot and shoe warehouse at the corner of Brunswick Street and Wilson Street. It is taken from a booklet issued by the firm to mark the opening of the new warehouse in 1928. The man supervising the female staff is C Kerr, cashier. On the wall is one of the new Synchronome electric clocks, giving identical time on every floor.

The counting house was located on the second floor. It was said to have benefited more than any other department from the new building as far as space was concerned: "In their old quarters, a person of moderately generous proportions found some difficulty in making his way between the desks and stools. Now there is room, not only to move about, but to provide accommodation for more desks should the occasion arise."
