Bayne & Duckett

Three directors of Bayne & Duckett pictured in a booklet issued by the firm in 1928 to mark the opening of the Glasgow warehouse extension.

George Duckett, son of founder William, became senior partner when his father died in 1888. He played a major role in expanding the business, regularly travelling to visit outlets and to build up contacts in the trade. He was the first chairman when Bayne & Duckett became a private limited company in 1917, and carried on working until the age of 84.

Arthur Duckett, younger brother of George, looked after the financial side of the business and managed the retail outlets. He worked for seventy-one years with the firm.

Secretary William Ducket was the son of George and was to become managing director and then chairman. He guided the firm through the difficult years of the Second World War, and accumulated over fifty years of service to the company.
