Umbrellas made by Wilson, Matheson & Co, clothing manufacturers, are illustrated in the firm's wholesale and export trade list published c 1872.

The umbrella department occupied the entire ground floor of the warehouse at 42 Glassford Street. The company claimed to have a full assortment of cotton, alpaca and silk umbrellas always in stock, for markets which included all corners of the British Empire as well as Brazil, China and the Philippines. Ribs were made of cane, steel and whalebone. Prices ranged from 11/9d (just under 59p) to 58/9d (nearly £2.94) per dozen.
