Theosophical Society Library

The library of the Glasgow Lodge of the Theosophical Society is illustrated in this 1908 postcard. At the time, the Glasgow Lodge was based at 5 West Regent Street. At the beginning of the 21st century the society continues to maintain the library at its premises at 17 Queens Crescent, where meetings are regulary held on Thursday evenings.

Theosophy, a mixture of Eastern religion and Western occultism, has been influential in popularising Asian philosophy in the West. The Theosophical Society was formed in New York in 1875 and incorporated at Madras, India on 3 April 1905. The co-founders were Henry Steel Olcott, American religious leader and author, and Helena Blavatsky, a Russian mystic. In Scotland it organises regular programmes of talks and workshops covering aspects of theosophy, astrology, yoga, meditation, comparative religion, philosophy, earth energies, etc.
