Roll of Honour, 1914-18

This image depicts the different armed forces in which citizens of Glasgow gave their lives during the First World War, at the beginning of the Roll of Honour published by Glasgow Corporation in 1922.

The city's Roll of Honour lists almost 18,000 names, giving name, rank, unit and address. It was accepted at the time that the register would not be without omissions, and requests for additions are still being received to this day.

The project to compile a register of those killed on active service began in autumn 1915, with appeals in newspapers and letters to employers, churches, schools, etc. After the war was over, a proof copy was exhibited in the city's libraries for two months, to allow people to check for errors or to suggest additions. To avoid possible controversy, it was decided that no mention would be made of distinctions gained.
