Highland Light Infantry

Lord Provost Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson (1851-1944) in his chain of office with James Dalrymple (d 1934), general manager of the Corporation Tramways Department. Thee two men were inspecting recruits for the 15th Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry in George Square, September 1914.

Remarkably, an entire battalion of around 1,000 men was raised from the men of the Glasgow tramways in sixteen hours on 13 September 1914. Dalrymple was credited with being the main driving force behind this achievement.

The 15th Battalion arrived in France in November 1915. In July the following year it was thrown into the Battle of the Somme, suffering heavy casualties in the area around Thiepval. In early 1917 the battalion took part in the advance to the Hindenburg Line, and distiguished itself in the action which resulted in the capture of a number of German guns at Francilly.
