The 7th SR referred to is the 7th Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), a pre-war territorial battalion tracing its history to the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers created during 1859-1860.

The 7th Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was mobilised at Victoria Road, Glasgow on 4 Aug 1914 and assigned to the Scottish Rifle Brigade in the Lowland Division. In May 1915 the battalion was deployed to the Mediterranean, embarking from Liverpool on 24 May and arriving at Alexandria in Egypt on 4 June. On 14 Jun 1915 the battalion landed at Gallipoli where it suffered heavy casualties. On 9 Jan 1916 the unit withdrew from the Dardanelles and arrived at Mudros 21 Feb 1916.
