Summer Palace, Sipri

Walter Macfarlane & Co supplied an ornamental cast iron and steel peristyle, depicted in this photograph c 1910, for the for the summer palace of the Maharajah Scindia of Gwalior, India. The structure consisted of an open verandah and balcony with covered way over a central stair. The verandah was intended for use as an open dining-room. Staff from Macfarlane's went to India to supervise its erection.

Sipri is known today as Shivpuri. This quaint little town with its luxuriant forests and hilly environs used to be the summer capital of the Scindia rulers. Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia paid great attention to the development of Shivpuri, building a large palace and developing the city. It was the summer capital of Gwalior State and government offices were transferred there in the hot summer months.
