Queen's Park, 1873-1874

A relaxed looking Queen's Park team is pictured with the Challenge Cup, 1873-1874. This was the first occasion on which the trophy (soon to be renamed the Scottish Cup) was awarded.

It was no surprise that Queen's Park were the first winners of the trophy, as they had dominated Scottish football since their foundation in 1867. Their triumph was achieved without conceding a single goal, with victories over Dumbreck, Eastern and Renton preceding a 2-0 win against Clydesdale in the final. Queen's Park played a leading role in the foundation of the Scottish Football Association in 1873, and contributed £5 towards the cost of the trophy.

Futher success followed for Queen's Park, who in season 1892-1893 were able to celebrate winning the Scottish Cup for the tenth time. But the club resisted the advance of professionalism in the game, and their continuing insistence on remaining an amateur club made it increasingly difficult to attract top players, especially following the establishment of the the Scottish League in season 1890-1891.
