One of the three trains running on the Festival Railway is seen here passing a play area at the Glasgow Garden Festival. The trains were as popular as the photograph suggests and there were often long queues at the three stations on the route.
Situated on the western sector of the Festival site, the railway was regarded as an ideal introduction to the area. A 600 millimetre narrow guage loop carried visitors on a journey of more than 2 kilometres, taking 25 minutes to complete the circuit. The engines were modelled on Caledonian Railway 4-2-2 Locomotive no 23, built in Glasgow in 1886.
The other attraction for transport buffs was the tramway which ferried visitors from the Kingston Entrance to the north end of the High Street. Five restored trams, including two formerly run by Glasgow Corportation, rattled along the specially laid route - a nostalgic trip for many who experienced it.
