Tait's Directory p43

The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 43 includes surnames from Lyon to Moores.

Moores, Carrick & Co was the name of the company that owned the famous Ship Bank. One of the partners, Robert Carrick, was manager and cashier. He had worked in the bank since joining as a junior clerk, aged 15, and by 1783 he was one of the best-known businessmen in Glasgow, with interests in several other businesses which he used to visit when the bank closed for lunch. He was a sober character, known for his catch phrase "it's not convenient" which he used when disappointing a customer.

Carrick was also a magistrate, Dean of Guild in 1802 and 1803, and a director of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. Carrick Street was named for him.
