The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 36 includes surnames from Gilchrist to Hamilton.
The Glasgow Journal, founded by Andrew Stalker in 1741, was Glasgow's second oldest newspaper. It was published on a weekly basis, specialising in agricultural news, until absorbed by the Glasgow Chronicle in 1845.
Gilbert Hamilton was the Glasgow representative of the Carron Co in Glasgow, bill collector for the Bank of Scotland and the first secretary of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, from 1783 until 1808. He was Lord Provost from 1792 to 1794 when the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War resulted in the disruption of trade and an economic downturn in Glasgow. Many businesses failed and Hamilton was often called upon to wind them up as well as to help provide relief for those Glaswegians who faced financial ruin.
