Tait's Directory p17

The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 17 includes surnames from Buchanan to Boyle.

Daniel Baxter was a long established bookseller, having been in business since 1744, and a Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow since 1747. Records show that he employed a number of apprentice bookbinders. He died in 1784.

Mrs Jean Buchanan managed the Saracen's Head Inn and another establishment in the Saltmarket. She was the widow of James Graham, a proprietor of the Saracen's Head who died c 1777, and subsequently married a young lawyer and fortune-hunter named James Buchanan. Buchanan frittered away her money on ill-advised property investments and she became bankrupt. The Saracen's Head was sold by her creditors in 1792 to William Miller, and converted to shops and houses.
