The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester.
This is the first page of text following the dedications. The directory begins with a list of the magistrates and town councillors, headed by Lord Provost Patrick Colquhoun. Merchants predominate.
