Empire Exhibition

Some of the leading personalities involved in the Empire Exhibition of 1938.

The industrialist Sir James Lithgow was credited with getting the idea off the ground, aware of the need to do something to boost the Glasgow economy.

As the Exhibition's President, the Earl of Elgin was often its spokesman. He played a leading role in raising the £10 million required to mount the Exhibition.

Chief architect Thomas Tait is best remembered for Tait's Tower, but he also kept tight control of his team of architects to ensure that a consistent modern style was maintained in the design of all the Exhibition buildings.

As convener of the Administrative Committee, Cecil M Weir was responsible for important decisions. He was knighted while in post.

General manager S J Graham had the responsibility of ensuring that all of the 876 staff pulled their weight to ensure the smooth running of the Exhibition.
